Rita Mosiman Presents … Ancient Beauty

Ancient Beauty, Kasha Katuwe NM

ANCIENT BEAUTY

Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in north central New Mexico abounds with nature’s artistic sculptures, most of which are cone shaped, thus looking like tents.  This photo captures only a small amount of its variety of formations that reach up to New Mexico’s incredibly blue skies.  Tent Rocks is one of my favorite places to visit.  When I’m there, I always feel as if I were winding my way through an ancient city.  The contrasts of shadows and light, as well as colors, are thrilling to view.  It is impossible for me to go there without returning in a better frame of mind than when I arrived.

Rita Mosiman Presents … Pristine Snow

PRISTINE SNOW

The pristine snow invites me to walk, but if I do, it won’t be pristine anymore.  Still, if I don’t, someone else will, or the sun will soon melt it.  It looks truly lovely untouched.  The day is still, the air crisp.  Winter days can seem dreary as the season wears on, but nature provides us beautiful scenes in all seasons.  I think I’ll leave the snow untouched so that hopefully someone else who might venture out on this cold day will be warmed by it.

Rita Mosiman Presents … Magnificent Cottonwoods

MAGNIFICENT COTTONWOODS

As we flow through life’s path, we’re often fortunate to connect with a glorious moment in nature.  The lovely golden colors of the magnificent cottonwoods along the Rio Grande reach up toward an incredibly blue sky.  The sculpture of tree limbs made prominent against the light color of the leaves create fantastic contrasts.  I want to spend time lying under these grand trees, looking up at the patterns they form against and with the sky.   I hope you, too, are finding glorious moments in nature. Rita Mosiman Presents … Walls

Photography and prose by Rita Mosiman

WALLS

The rock wall, lovingly formed, attracts my eyes with its embellishment of snow.  I think of how skilled the hands were that created it.  I wonder what kind of soul directed those hands. Suddenly my mind shifts to walls, in general.  There are so many types.  Some walls are retaining.  Some divide property—and people. Sometimes it’s good when a wall comes down. Some walls are emotional, seeming to protect us from hurt. Some are made to be solely beautiful. Maybe it’s good for us to notice what kind of walls we’ve created in our lives. Continue reading

Enjoying New Mexico

Article by Sherrian Felix

It has been five months since I became a New Mexico resident, and I am loving every minute of it. Being in a place so rich in culture and filled with beauty, I felt it is my duty to share some of what I have seen, and perhaps offer some insight into places to visit in New Mexico.

Located in the Manzano Mountains, the Fourth of July Campground and Canyon, has been made famous by the brilliant display of colors from the large maple trees during the fall.

I took these pictures from the Fourth of July Canyon two weeks ago.

El Rancho De Las Golondrinas (The Ranch of the Swallows) is a living history museum located in Santa Fe. I was fortunate enough to attend the Harvest Festival this year. I got the opportunity to crush grapes for wine by foot, make tortillas, grind corn for flower, look at animals and watch the spanish dancers on the main stage. Continue reading

Rita Mosiman Presents… Warm Light

WARM LIGHT

Warm light and subtle color bring a soft appearance to the rugged mountains.   What a gift!  I had been scurrying all day to get done more than was possible in a day, feeling a bit frustrated.  In the midst of this unexpected sight, the frustration left me.  What did it matter that I didn’t get to everything?  Aren’t lists never ending anyway?   Let’s soak in the beautiful moments when we find them!

SCULPTURES

Fall colors are approaching.  I can’t wait to see the gold of the cottonwood leaves against New Mexico’s azure skies!  Equally beautiful are the forms of the tree’s branches that become more pronounced as the leaves turn gold.  Each tree offers a unique sculpture, which, when seen with the colors of leaves and sky, creates a painting of incredible design and blend of hues.

Nature’s gifts are stupendous.  I hope man remembers to gift in return by preserving and respecting nature and letting the warmth its gifts bring us spill onto those whose paths cross ours.

Rita Mosiman Presents… The Old Fence

THE OLD FENCE

Blue Morning glories bloom next to a dark wood fence

Poetry and Photo by Rita Mosiman

The old fence
And morning glories
Bring sweet memories
Of days gone by

I remember the smiles
Of grandparents and friends
The fresh, clear mornings
Of days gone by

The old fence
May hold some secrets
Best left behind
Of days gone by

Now fall approaches
Morning glories soon past
Fall leaves speak too
Of days gone by.

Each passing season gives us something wondrous to see and to feel. Is it the old fence alone or is it the old fence with the morning glories that sparked a frenzy of memories? I don’t really know, though I think it’s the beautiful combination. What’s important is that the memories were sparked and a warm feeling ensued. There’s something about getting out in the natural world that touches our spirits, that balances our lives and connects us to loved ones who’ve transitioned and loved ones who are still with us.
