Meet Bry Foster

Love is an Action Bry FosterHi! So, I’m Bry. I’m 23 and an Army wife. I love to read, write, bake—not well but, good enough…I’m a pretty free spirit. I probably swear too much and I have a pretty big sweet tooth.

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always written. I never imagined that I would actually publish anything though. I started dabbling on a writer’s webpage a couple of years ago and began receiving encouragement to publish from not only fans on the site but also my husband. After that I started seriously pursuing writing.

When did you start writing your first book?

I started LIAA a little over a year ago. It’s changed so much since then that it’s hardly the same book. I wasn’t consistently writing it, I just started it and I would write here and there when the mood struck me. I wasn’t a full-time writer so, my writing was very lax in that way.

How would you describe Khloe, the main character in the book?

I would describe Khloe as head strong, to a fault. She is very set in her ways. Khloe believes that if she walks a certain line, that she will be prosperous in achieving her goals. It’s not until Cash comes along that she realizes she can afford to loosen up more. By the end, I think she understands what she’d been missing out on by keeping herself closed off. She’s book smart but, she doesn’t flaunt it. And when she loves, she loves fiercely.

Where do you get your ideas?

Crazily enough, my ideas usually come to me when characters start talking in my head. The conversations can come from any time frame in the story and they won’t stop having the same conversation until I write it down somewhere. After that, questions about the characters start to form in my mind. How did they get into this situation? What are their backgrounds? My process is kind of fill in the blank. LOL

Love Is An Action started out with Khloe and Cash conversing about his big secret. He was asking her to join his crazy plot. And Khloe spent most of her time in my head, freaking out in her head.

What project are you working on now?

Currently, I’m working on two separate paranormal works that I’m really excited about.

What were the challenges you experienced with getting your first book published?

Where to start? I had so many challenges with getting the manuscript for LIAA written, edited, and on the way to publishing. I think one of the biggest challenges was finding the confidence to just write. I find that when I write for me, my character’s thoughts and actions come naturally. It doesn’t feel forced like when I first started freaking out about the prospect of publishing. Also, finding beta readers that I was compatible with was challenging. Luckily, I happened to meet some great ladies that I am excited to work with again.

What would your protagonist think about you? Would she want to hang out with you, the author, as her creator?

I think Khloe would like me. We have similar senses of humor and I can relate to her issues with her father. On the other hand, the fact that neither of us do well with holding our tongues might lead to a strain in our friendship 🙂 Continue reading

My name is Kendall Carrington—or so I thought.

One night, a routine traffic stop turned the world I thought I knew upside down. I wasn’t who I thought I was. No one was. I had been kidnapped when I was young, and everything I had been told was all a lie. But the lies didn’t end there. If it hadn’t been for Lincoln Hunt, I might not have ever found out the truth.

My real name is Danielle Tucker.

This is my story of pain, betrayal, and finding the true meaning of home. Continue reading

I Was A Famous Rockstar – Excerpt

Rock Star tour banner

It’s okay.

There is a perfectly good reason why:

1.) I can’t move my body.

2.) I smell a strange lemony scent.

3.) I am lying on soft sheets, on an even softer bed, and am wearing a long shirt I do not recognize.

Unfortunately, I can’t think of that perfectly good reason.

A monitor beeps next to me, a noisy rhythmic sound that every part of me—the part that wants to play my music, the part that practices in my parents’ too-small basement—hates. The sound blares in my ears, and I miss the nothingness, the silence that surely I have just awoken from.

Perfume hits my nostrils. It’s too sweet, as if somebody has bathed in bubble gum and roses. It reminds me of the girls at school, and I turn my head away.

“Oh my God!” a high-pitched voice squeals in my ear in an American accent. “He’s awake!”

Shouldn’t I be awake?

“You’re awake, Caleb! You did it!” the voice says, this time louder and more screeching. I’m being unfair. There’s a joyousness there, and I want to capture it with music. I want to smile. I am smiling. If only everyone praised me with the same enthusiasm. I mean, I haven’t even opened my eyes yet.

Why can’t I open my eyes?

A shiver runs through me, and I scrunch my eyes together. I struggle to part my lids as if I’ve forgotten how to do it.

Ready, Set, Drama! The Family Portrait Series so far

We’re 4 books into the Family Portrait series and I thought I’d chat about the series so far and what’s to come 😉

Ready Set Drama special

In Changes you were introduced to the Banovics and DaCostas. You got a brief history of these families and it left you wondering how they would all tie together.

Changes fits the name of the book as the Banovic Family experienced many changes from their life as a family and individually. Add to the mix, there’s the DaCosta family who’s also experiencing changes in their life. – Musings of Fictional Ally

My favorite: I loved the dialogue between Astrid Wilson and Adriana Banovic. Astrid is the queen bee at Westwood Academy and when Adriana reluctantly returns to school, Astrid’s reign is threatened and she goes out of her way to make Adriana’s life at Westwood Academy, horrendous! Adriana is no shrinking violet so hatches a plan to put Astrid in her place. Ready, Set, Drama!

Banovic Siblings Family Portrait

Banovic Siblings took you deeper into the lives of the Banovic Siblings and how they crossed paths with the DaCosta girls. Claws came out as well as the dark side of the second generation Banovic siblings.

I loved this one! This was my favourite. This is when the Banovic and the DeCosta children start to come into their own. They are not innocent like other NA book characters. Rachel P

You also got to experience the relationship between the first generation Banovic siblings; Robin, Roxanne and Adrian (who remains a mystery).

This book set the stage for the other books to come. Readers loved “Siblings” the most and it has the most reviews.

I’m sad that the book ends on a cliffhanger but it’ll make picking up the book 3 much more exciting! Jolanta Daab

My favorite scene: Adriana encourages Leighann to try pot for the first time, the result is a hilarious mix of hijinks and close calls. I laughed when I wrote that scene in the television script and a year later when I rewrote the scene for the book it still had me in stitches.

Bastard's Brew promo

Bastard’s Brew is my favorite so far. I loved that this book focused on 3 major characters and really gave readers a lot of meat. Adriana, Kevin and Haze all had major events happen in their lives. A lot of ethical issues were addressed, but knowing these characters, what is ethical to you and me, flies out the window by their standards.

What I really like about these books is that Ms. Felix delves deeply into the lives of each character. She doesn’t just skim the surface of everyone; I feel like I really get to know each of them really well. – Tina VanDynHoven

My favorite scene: This scene is my favorite because it broke my heart. Haze is one of the better behaved characters in the series so I celebrated with him when he got his well deserved big break, but it was overshadowed by a horrible incident. His relationship with Adriana was put to the test and we got to see a different side of her as she proved her love for him.

Perfect Escape promo

Perfect Escape was really hard for me to write. It dealt with the relationship with Leighann and her father… my own dad passed by the time I finished writing this book.

This book was about Leighann, who people loved since Changes and they really got to know her in “Escape”. We got to see how mean her mother can be making readers love Leighann even more. She got to experience her first crush, taking readers back to their first love in high school.

Being a mom, it was hard for me to read how heartless Savi is with Leighann. – Karen-Anne Stewart

My favorite scene: Zax sitting on Leighann’s stoop waiting for her to come out and talk to him. He orders chinese food, pops on his headphone and casually dines, like it was the most natural thing in the world.

That’s where we are are so far in the series. What’s to come?

  • More Frankie, Kristin, Zax love triangle.
  • Can Adriana continue to hide her secret from Haze?
  • Will Joel’s facade crumble?
  • Did Kevin really create the perfect escape? Will his “business” dealings catch up with him?

All will be revealed in Book 5 releasing in the summer 2015.

Are You Ready to take the plunge to NA?

Amber HartAre you ready to take the plunge?

The world of new adult is still in its prime. It’s the perfect time to dive head-first into a sea of novels. Or, if you’re like me, maybe you prefer to get your feet wet first? Try a novel or two? See of it’s your “thing”? Totally understand. It’s a new genre that didn’t exist a couple years ago and now there’s a plethora of books out there. It can be overwhelming. Where do you start first? Here’s a list that I hand plucked off my own shelves. I promise they’re worth a try.

A dark read about a girl, Water, who wakes up with no memory of who she is or how exactly she got in the hospital in the first place. With only a tattoo on her hip and a shadow in her mind, Water has to uncover the secrets of what landed her in her new life. Problem is, sometimes the truth is worse than lies.

This novel hooked me with its powerful topics wrapped up in beautiful writing. It’s a story that I couldn’t figure out until the very end. Perfect for fans of gritty thriller reads.

FOREPLAY by Sophie Jordan.

Foreplay follows the story of Pepper, a girl who is completely in love with her best friend, Hunter. In an effort to make Hunter notice her as more than a friend—and more specifically…experienced in the bedroom—Pepper decides to take passionate pointers from a well-known bartender, Reece, who has a dangerous past.

What I loved about this novel is that it’s sweet, which I wasn’t expecting. Pepper goes through such a personal growth and Reece isn’t actually who he seems, in a good way.

SLAMMED by Colleen Hoover

Moving to a new town has its own complications, especially for Layken, who is grieving the unexpected loss of her father. Trying to be the rock for her mother and younger brother, Layken doesn’t show just how much she’s hurting. But that doesn’t stop next door neighbor Will from seeing through to the deeper parts of Layken. With his passion for slam poetry, Will expresses grief of his own. Neither expects just how closely they’re tied, or what could bring their romance to a halt.

I liked that this book had slam poetry, something I’d never read about before. I also respected that the characters were dealt hard hands, and that each showed incredible spirit and courage. Continue reading

Cover Story – Bastard’s Brew

Since the release of Bastard’s Brew people have been asking me about the cover. I thought I’d address it here.

The cover was designed by me and my sister Sherrian. I got a crash course in graphic design while working at Disney when I lived out in Los Angeles. I started doing basic clean ups on their presentation slides, adding box covers, drop shadows, resizing and that sort of thing. Like I said it was very basic but paid really well. With my limited skills I was making a good living. I heard that the pros were making crazy amount of money just by working twice a year, so naturally I wanted to do that. It’s not like I sold out for money, I genuinely had an interest in graphic design so I enrolled in a couple of online graphic design and Photoshop courses with Santa Monica College.

Paint splat and colors

My first graphic design gig outside of Disney was designing a brochure for American Film Institute (AFI). After that I was lucky enough to join the design team for Caesars Palace and Bally’s for a weekend gig. I learned a lot and failed miserably. It made me realize how much I still didn’t know. During my downtime from Disney, I would hit the library to learn everything I could about graphic design, from colors schemes to font types to placement. I remember getting up early and walking to the library about 2 miles away and spending 8 hours there. I would bring my lunch and water and I work at it.

Not everything I do graphically is fantastic or even fit for human eyes, but once in a while I do something that can be fairly passable or I’m a little proud of.

I like the cover for Brew but I like Siblings cover more which was designed by my sister, Sherrian and cousin Kendell Clarke.

The Process

I had no idea what I wanted the cover to look like. I know I didn’t want any nudity or revealing body parts. I like simple covers think 50 Shades of Grey or Fahrenheit 451.

The series has a bit of mystery to them and this book took on more of a dark undertone, so I figured the cover should reflect that. When I was brainstorming I had a vision of a dark male figure walking away from light. Below is the mock up cover.

Bastard's Brew cover mockup

My sister came up with the concept for the first two books and also the idea of using silhouettes. Since we don’t have a lot of money to invest in exclusive images, silhouettes are a great alternative. Sure I could pay for stock photos, but I’ve seen lots of book covers using the same images, actors or poses. I want my covers to be original, out of the box or different from what’s out there.

I was out on a hike one Saturday, when I noticed huge, dark, angry clouds devouring the mountains behind me. It was beautiful and scary all at the same, I couldn’t take my eyes off it, so I took a picture with my dumb phone (it amazes me the great photos I get from that phone). I had no idea the photo would end up on my book cover.

Dark clouds used in Brew Cover

Taken with my dumb phone

The resolution of the book has to be high, so we had to get creative and photomerge. My sister then added a dark hue to make the clouds darker and more mean looking. Then I went about looking for my bastard. He was a bit tricky, because of the resolution his edges were very jagged, so we had to sort of take him apart and put him together in pieces. The result is what you see below.

Bastard's Brew Book cover

I was a bit nervous to see what the hardcopy would look like and if Createspace would accept it with no issues. Would you believe this is the first cover I’ve submitted to them without any errors? Take a look at what the proof looked like.
