How insomnia caused Anna Lores to write her own novel

Author Anna LoresAnna Lores started writing romance as a by-product of insomnia. After a year of late night reading, she borrowed her son’s laptop after he went to bed and set about breathing life to her very own characters. After a month, she was surprised with a new laptop of her own to pursue her dreams.

With a B.A. in English Literature and a desire to fill her world with wonderful stories she and her close friends could not just talk about, but gush over, she shed her job as mom of three in the midnight hours and began her journey into the publishing world.

Now, Anna is a multi-published author of spicy contemporary and paranormal romance [novels].

Anna Lores, in her own words

Most people don’t know that when I came down with insomnia I became a writer. I read one to three books a night for more than a year when my husband suggested I put my English Literature degree to use and write my own novel. I took the challenge and began writing anytime I had a free second from homeschooling my three children. Continue reading

What the Valley Knows, not your average teen romance

I was given a copy of the .pdf version of What the Valley Knows in exchange for an honest review so here goes.

If you like Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why you will love this book. If you hate 13 Reasons Why you will love this book. I loved this book.

The author did a wonderful job of taking readers into the scene. Having just been the victim of a bad car accident, some of the feelings that the heroine had in the hospital after her accident were very familiar. That’s how real the writing was.

The secondary characters were like people you would come across in life, you have the people who give you the creeps, those you want to smack till kingdom come and those you love.

As our teenaged heroine struggles to find her place in the new town she and her mother moved to, her single mother has her own set of struggles but there is a divide between the two so neither of them knows about the other.

The author does seamless transformations between the adult and teenagers in the book. I don’t want to give anything away, so I will recommend this book, it will keep you guessing and really takes you out of your reality into the lives of these characters. Continue reading

“Oh, darling. You’re going to be so easy to conquer.” His finger reached under my chin and pulled my face back to meet his. “I can’t wait to strip you out of that dress and watch you crawl around my home naked. I’m going to spank that delectable ass with every damn pervertible I can find. Hairbrushes, wooden spoons, spatulas, and I might even try a damn baking sheet. That ass of yours is always going to be prettily pink and perfectly swollen while you’re under my roof.”

My name is Mark Matthews. I own half of London, and the part I don’t own, I’m working on.

Life was all going swimmingly well until Michael Redcliff entered my life, demanding that I marry his daughter. Actually, swap demand for blackmail. He’s got goods on me that I want no one else to see, so for the time being I need to be his little lap dog.

I’ll marry his daughter. I’ll give him all the status, money and power he can handle… for as long as it takes me to get a divorce. You see, I can’t renege on our little arrangement – but she can. I give her a week. One week and she’ll be screaming the place down for her legal counsel.

I am never wrong. Continue reading

A dark fantasy from four bestselling authors who just happened to be on the 8.05pm from Chicago one March evening…

My Review

If Stephen King’s It and Supernatural (the television series) had a love child this would be it.

JF Penn has been known to put the fear of all things unexplained in my heart. So naturally, when she teamed up with three of her peers, well-known authors, Lindsey Buroker, Zach Bohannon, and J. Thorn, I was more than curious. What’s even more fascinating is that they wrote the story on a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans.

The story is a short one but entertaining as hell! I loved the prose and similes used throughout the story. It really made me feel like I was on the train with the characters.

The writing was so crisp and raw that I could smell the stench of blood, hear the honking of the train and other passenger sounds, and vividly see the epic fight scenes.

While reading the book I kept trying to figure out which writer was which character, and who wrote what. The writing was so flawless that you wouldn’t believe that it came from the mastermind of four people from different cultures and backgrounds.

This was storytelling at it’s best because, like most recent stories I’ve read, it was not written in the first person, yet I was able to relate to the characters better than if it was.

I really enjoyed it, and it reminded me of Stephen King’s It which I read when I was about 11-years-old, and re-reading it later in life, still haunts me.

The story pulls you through the pages from one scene to the next, it is fast-paced and packed with action and adventure. Even though it was short, there was enough information about the characters for readers to paint a picture in their minds. I felt that the story was not predictable at all, which was a good thing because it kept me guessing, and when a certain character was killed off my jaw dropped.

Overall, if you like supernatural thrillers you should definitely add this one to your summer reading list.

My Review of The $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau

$100 Startup book coverTitle: The $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau.
Genre: Non-fiction

In The $100 Startup, Chris Guillebeau shows you how to lead of life of adventure, meaning and purpose – and earn a good living.

Still in his early thirties, Chris is on the verge of completing a tour of every country on earth – he’s already visited more than 175 nations – and yet he’s never held a “real job” or earned a regular paycheck.  Rather, he has a special genius for turning ideas into income, and he uses what he earns both to support his life of adventure and to give back.

There are many others like Chris – those who’ve found ways to opt out of traditional employment and create the time and income to pursue what they find meaningful.  Sometimes, achieving that perfect blend of passion and income doesn’t depend on shelving what you currently do.  You can start small with your venture, committing little time or money, and wait to take the real plunge when you’re sure it’s successful.

In preparing to write this book, Chris identified 1,500 individuals who have built businesses earning $50,000 or more from a modest investment (in many cases, $100 or less), and from that group he’s chosen to focus on the 50 most intriguing case studies.  In nearly all cases, people with no special skills discovered aspects of their personal passions that could be monetized, and were able to restructure their lives in ways that gave them greater freedom and fulfillment.

Here, finally, distilled into one easy-to-use guide, are the most valuable lessons from those who’ve learned how to turn what they do into a gateway to self-fulfillment.  It’s all about finding the intersection between your “expertise” – even if you don’t consider it such — and what other people will pay for.  You don’t need an MBA, a business plan or even employees.  All you need is a product or service that springs from what you love to do anyway, people willing to pay, and a way to get paid.

Not content to talk in generalities, Chris tells you exactly how many dollars Chris Guilebeau authorhis group of unexpected entrepreneurs required to get their projects up and running; what these individuals did in the first weeks and months to generate significant cash; some of the key mistakes they made along the way, and the crucial insights that made the business stick.  Among Chris’s key principles: if you’re good at one thing, you’re probably good at something else; never teach a man to fish – sell him the fish instead; and in the battle between planning and action, action wins.

In ancient times, people who were dissatisfied with their lives dreamed of finding magic lamps, buried treasure, or streets paved with gold.  Today, we know that it’s up to us to change our lives.  And the best part is, if we change our own life, we can help others change theirs.  This remarkable book will start you on your way. My Review

As part of the Ex-Billionaire Escort book tour, I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am very picky when it comes to romance novels because I don’t like how female characters are portrayed. I decided to give this one a try because the story concept sounded great.

Lowell an actress, originally from Texas is on the fast track of making it big in Hollywood. Looming in the background is the stereotypical issues plaguing Hollywood females, and Lo is not immune. After having one too many drinks one night, she gets herself into a pickle when the car she was in gets pulled over by a cop. If course being up and coming in Hollywood means that at anytime someone with a cell phone is waiting to capture your most embarrassing moment, which is exactly what happens to Lo. Continue reading

Scrubs by Brooke Harris – Promo + Review

Scrubs Brooke HarrisTitle: Scrubs by Brooke Harris
Publication date: December 4th 2015
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

I like fast cars, beautiful women and great sex.
I hate drugs. I can’t stand the idiots who take them and I loathe the bastards who supply them. Drugs cost me my whole world.
I wear many faces; right now I’m Doctor Lucas Callaghan and I’ll be him until I get my revenge.
My real name will be the last words to ever pass their lips.

I hate my name, Aoife Brennan, as soon as people hear it they treat me differently because of my father.
Medical school isn’t my dream, it’s his. But, it’s the least I owe him after everything I’ve done. I’m trying to be a good girl, but even good girls make mistakes.

He’s lying about who he is, she’s kidding herself about who she can be. They’re polar opposites with one very big secret in common.

My Review

I am so beyond honored that I got to review this book. From the moment I laid eyes on the sexy-ass cover I was curious. I couldn’t wait for the tour to swing round my way so I could sign up to review. I checked my email several times waiting for my copy to arrive and finally it did.

If I could, I would give Scrubs a perfect 10! The writing was fun and gripping, the flawed characters were so well written that I loved them with a passion. I read this book all in one go, and then I had to email the author and let her know I am hanging on the edge of a cliff waiting for Scrubs part 2. I just have to know how this story ends.

The pacing was wonderful, there were no boring unnecessary details, and every scene taught me something about the characters that helped advance the story. I loved the dialogues between all of the characters and man oh man Lucas/Sean had me going from day one; such a complex, smart, well thought out character. Even the females were not the helpless little waifs that you read about in most romance novels. The lead female can certainly hold her own against Dr. Lucas Callaghan.

There were some OMG moments and moments that had me laughing out loud, along with more than a few “did he/she really say that?” I had to go back and read it again. Yep they went there. I even enjoyed the hot intimate scenes; it was not over the top or too much unnecessary descriptions. It had enough for what it was; I loved the build up leading to it.

Hats off Ms. Brooke, I’m hooked on Scrubs.

Death isn’t always the end

Desecration by JF PennDeath isn’t always the end.

LONDON. When the body of a young heiress is found within the Royal College of Surgeons, Detective Sergeant Jamie Brooke is assigned to the case. An antique ivory figurine found beside the body is the only lead and she enlists Blake Daniel, a reluctant psychic, to help her discover the message it holds.

When personal tragedy strikes, Jamie has nothing left to lose and she must race against time to stop the mysterious Lyceum claiming another victim.

As Jamie and Blake delve into a macabre world of grave robbery, body modification, and the genetic engineering of monsters, they must fight to keep their sanity, and their lives.

A story of vengeance and passion for justice, a dark mystery with an edge of supernatural thriller.

My Review

This book is not for the squeamish or faint of heart. There is blood gore and some hedonistic rituals. It freaked me out and I loved it! The heroine Jamie Brooks takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. I began to wonder how much more is J.F going to put this poor woman through before she gives her a break? True to life, bad things happen to break us and either it does or we come out stronger in the end. Continue reading
