Family Portrait Jagger Bennett

Jagger Bennett, hated that entitled prick, Adrian Banovic. How dare he appear out of nowhere and take over his hospital? The same hospital Adrian walked away from years ago—which turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Jagger. Adrian had been the youngest chief of surgeon at Mt. Hope Memorial, when he disappeared, Jagger inherited that title and all the perks it allowed.

The night Adrian busted through the emergency entrance covered in blood with his niece on the gurney, he turned Jagger’s perfectly run hospital upside down. Jagger looked on from the operating theater and saw a master at work; Adrian didn’t miss a beat as he performed the operation that relieved the pressure on his injured nieces’ brain; had he worked on the other girl, she would have surely survived. Instead, Jagger tried to save her, but a misstep in his operating room had cost the girl her life. The shock of seeing his nemesis—who he hoped had died a painful death in a ditch somewhere, shook him to the core. He hadn’t lost a patient in years; he was the best surgeon at the hospital and no one questioned his reputation. Now Adrian was back to take his throne. Why was he back? How long was he planning on staying?

Jagger entered the office that Adrian occupied. It was the closest spare office to his niece’s room. The walls were bare, the desk had a pen holder with a few pens leaning idly against the side of the container and a lonely legal sized, yellow notepad sat on the middle of the surface. Jagger opened the file draws that stood against the wall, they were all empty. He tried the desk drawers, also empty, except for one, which was locked. He tugged at it but it didn’t budge. He looked around for something to pry it open, but the office was sparse. He tugged at the drawer again, even more determined to get it open.

“Looking for something?” Adrian stood in the door.

“I was looking for you.” Jagger moved to the front of the desk.

“In the drawer?” Adrian asked casually.

“Why are you here, Adrian?”

Adrian plopped Adriana’s file on the desk as if to taunt his intruder.

“I’m taking care of my niece.”

Jagger’s gaze climbed slowly from the folder to Adrian’s face.

“There are other doctors in this hospital who are perfectly capable of taking care of her.”

“I’m sure that’s true, but I’m here. What’s your point?”

“The board has a problem with you being here. You are causing a disruption, with the guards outside your niece’s room, restricted access to that floor and not letting anyone else examine her.”

“The board doesn’t have a problem with me being here, you do.”

“Yes, I have a problem with you being here. You walk in here and the board just bend over for you. There is an obvious conflict of interest but no one seems to care.”

“Let me spell it out for you… without Banovic money, this hospital would be a second-rate charity case, and that’s all the lube the board members need. So, if I want to pay for extra security to protect my niece, or give her a whole damn wing, I’ve earned that right.”

Jagger sized up Adrian. Both men locked in a stare of defiance. Jagger broke the tension first. He knew that Adrian would rather stand there all day than to cave in. He turned to leave when Adrian spoke.

“Heads-up, you’ll be signing my niece’s release papers this evening, you’re releasing her in my care tomorrow.”

“She’s not well enough to leave.” Jagger said without turning around. “You’re not the boss of me, Adrian. I run this hospital.” He let himself out.
